Boost Your Fertility With Essential Oils

One thing I love about blogging is the opportunity to learn about all kinds of new things that can help boost fertility. As you know, my own fertility journey was relatively straightforward.

That’s not to say that it was easy; I think inherently this journey is a difficult one. But after my two miscarriages, I was able to conceive my son in a relatively short period of time – 13 months from the first month trying to the month of my successful pregnancy test. I didn’t do IVF, didn’t do acupuncture, didn’t take loads of fertility drugs, and didn’t take every supplement under the sun, just a prenatal vitamin.

So getting to research and learn about the many things out there that I didn’t know about when I was on my own journey is fun – and there a lot of things out there that can help you!

One area I’ve been intrigued by recently is essential oils. Over the past few years, I’ve discovered that I know a lot of people who use these oils to create potions to do any number of things, from treating basic wounds and bruises, making sunscreen, thickening your hair, or cleaning your house!

The possibilities for these essential oil concoctions are practically limitless, and as you might, guess, essential oils can also help you manage your fertility. This week I’ve teamed up with Andrea Natelborg, a board-certified registered nurse. Specializing in fertility nursing and women’s health, Andrea spent years working alongside a world-renowned fertility doctor.

Andrea is also an infertility survivor, battling endometriosis, ovarian cysts, multiple surgeries, IVF treatment and two miscarriages. Andrea is living proof that essential oils can help you boost your fertility; after her miscarriages she discovered the oils and has since birthed 4 living children!

Stephanie: What are essential oils and how do they work?

Andrea: Essential oils are naturally produced by plants to help protect them from bacteria and fungus. Essential oils are extracted from the plant material itself using precise temperature and pressure during steam distillation.

There are three types of essential oils:

Perfume grade: used in candles, perfumes, and sprays. These make up the majority of essential oils on the market.

Food grade oils are used in gum and food flavorings. These are a small portion of essential oils on the market.

Therapeutic grade oils are the smallest portion available on the market.

Essential oils contain powerful healing properties. One drop of peppermint essential oil is equal to 28 cups of peppermint tea!

Essential oils come from plants, like this one, sage.

Stephanie: What should I consider when choosing and purchasing oils? So many brands out there all claim to be the best.

Andrea: First and foremost in selecting essential oils is purity. You want to find a company that is committed to:

Sourcing ensuring that expert growers in the plants indigenous environment harvest and distill the plants and the right time;

Testing ensuring that each batch of oil is tested for purity and composition both immediately after distillation and upon delivery at the production facility; and

Certifying that each bottle of oil is certified therapeutic grade and has the correct chemical components to deliver the desired results.

There are no regulations on essential oils, most store bought oils or oils purchased from online suppliers will contain synthetic fillers and harmful chemicals. These chemicals are big contributors to infertility and poor health in our daily lives. I strongly advise researching the oil company. Most oils will claim to be 100% pure when in reality they contain fillers and solvents. This can lead to the oils harming you or causing adverse reactions, or yielding a lesser result or health advantage.

Bottom line, know the company and feel good about using them.

Stephanie: What do I need to know about using oils safely?

Andrea: Essential oils are easily absorbed into the body. Each essential oil has a unique chemical composition that supports our bodies and their abilities to function at the highest level.

Essential oils are used three ways:

Aromatically best for emotional or respiratory support and cleaning the air diffused or inhaled from an open bottle or diffuser. When inhaled essential oils work almost immediately. They are able to reach many organs such as the lungs and the brain. They work with the limbic system which is the center for emotional stability. Essential oils are wonderful for instant emotional boosts.

Topically apply to the body directly for areas of irritation, immune boosting benefits and discomfort.  When essential oils are applied topically the compound is absorbed. Topical application is wonderful for eczema, arthritis or cuts.

Internally– for supporting the immune system, or helping with digestive issues. Only consume oils labeled safe for consumption or oils that have a serving size along with supplement facts on the container. When ingested essential oils are able to target the mouth, digestive tract and urogenital tract. Ingested oils can help kill yeast, bacteria and boost immunity. Only ingest safe oils.

I always recommend knowing the oil you are using and knowing what your intended side effect will be. Ex: using peppermint oil for a headache. Side effect would be headache relief. Purchase your oils from a reputable oil company who can stand behind the purity.

Essential oils have tremendous healing properties, including boosting fertility, when used properly.

Stephanie: If I’m trying to conceive, what are the oils I should definitely be using?  What are the Top 5 essential oils for boosting fertility and why?

Andrea: This is a highly individual issue. There’s not a cookie-cutter approach on using the oils as everyone’s fertility situation is so different.

Here are some common fertility issues and my suggestions for using the oils to manage them.

Endometriosis: geranium, cypress, or clary sage. Mix 1-2 drops of essential oil and apply to the abdomen and bottom of feet. May also be applied with a warm compress.

PCOS: clary sage

Hormone balance: clary sage

Unexplained Infertility: clary sage, Melissa, cypress, fennel

Low Ovarian Reserve: Blend of clove, thyme and wild orange, frankincense, clary sage

Male Factor Infertility: clary sage, sandalwood, whisper, basil
Repeat miscarriage: Blend of clove, thyme and wild orange; Clary sage is good for balancing hormones.

Stephanie:  Beyond directly boosting fertility, what kind of benefit can oils have for improving my overall health, which may in turn positively affect my fertility?

Andrea: Essential oils can boost the immune system and mood. Both of these have significant effects on fertility. Diet is a major player in infertility. Exercise and essential oils help boost energy and wellbeing.

Oils can also be used relieve the stress that inevitably comes with the fertility journey and modern living:

* Balance is great for grounding yourself daily.

* Wild Orange is wonderful for lifting moods

* Clary Calm helps with stress and anxiety

After soaking in all of Andrea’s wisdom, I’m ready to go ingest some oils! Thank you, Andrea, for taking the time to shed some light on this fascinating topic.

Love,

Stephanie xo

  • Hi Steph. With the low ovarian reserve blend, when do you use it. Currently taking gonal F and synagel.

  • My sister n law gave me Gary Young’s fertility blend that you roll on a tampon and you do that for 10 days. I can not find further instructions on how long you leave the tampon on. Do I use it during my period? I am also very nervous and don’t care for the idea of using a tampon when not on my period. Any advice would be helpful.

  • I would love to know how to apply the ovarian reserve blend and where/how often. I’m 33 and my AMH LEVELS are .58 so I’m hoping this blend helps! I made it una roller and it’s ready to go!

  • Hi Stephanie,

My AMH levels are low and wanted to understand where i can get this blended oil and where do you apply this and how often

  • Hello, I have low ovarian reserve and high FSH. It's been 6yrs unsuccessful with fertility. What EO would help boost my fertility?
